Numbers for the week in class 025: This week, there were 468 freshly registered text trademarks; only 8 fully cancelled text marks; and a whopping 676 applications were abandoned before reaching the finish line!

Note: The marks in part 1 are now fully registered and active! This list is compiled from the USPTO Trademark Search system. Some of these are legitimate brand names! I’ve included them on this list because those brand names are also words or phrases that may be used on the goods in question by crafters and makers.

PART 1-C: INTERESTING ILLUSTRATED MARK(S) OF THE WEEK

Today, let’s take a look at a few freshly registered trademarks from a designer’s point of view, to see where these logos have gone wrong.

Bonehead Burger Co.: This isn’t the worst logo I’ve ever seen, but it does have its problems. The biggest issue is the stroke width around the bones; it’s way thicker than the stroke of the bun and the skull. Stroke widths should be uniform in this case. The text along a curve is also slightly not centered; the “Bonehead Burger Co.”  part at the top is a little closer to the smaller inner circle than it is to the larger outer circle.

Desert Dime: The “Dime” part of this is really hard to read, mainly because it’s red on top of green and brown. It’s hard to see because the image is really small, but that red is actually a slightly lighter red, with a stroke around it of a slightly darker red. I’d want to see a much heavier outer stroke in black or white, to cut through that cactus and dirt and give some separation so the word can be read.

Goddess of Slots: I did the measurements, and all three white boxes with ladies in them are the same width. and likewise, the set of ladies are centered within their black rectangle. But because of the slot arm on the left, some elements feel unbalanced! Optical illusions like this are the bane of a font designer’s existence; you have to make something uneven in order for it to look even. Right now, the center white box with a lady feels a little smaller than the other two, and the left side of the black rectangle feels slightly heavier than the right side. A pixel or two of movement, and this would be optically much improved.

PART 2: CANCELLED MARKS

(Standard disclaimer: Always double-check these words and phrases before using them in your designs, to make sure there isn’t a separate registration that is still live and active. Some marks have multiple registrations!)

There were only 8 cancellations this week, and none of them seemed important to crafters and makers!

PART 3: ABANDONED APPLICATIONS! 🎉

Here are the applications that were abandoned this week in class 025, with mark drawing code 4. The most likely cause was the applicant not submitting corrected, updated, or informative material by the USPTO’s deadline. Ding, dong, these witches are dead! 🪦

[sic] = A spelling, spacing, grammar, or punctuation error is part of the mark, not a typo from my butterfingers.
[removed from spreadsheet] = The cancelled item had been on my spreadsheet of marks, and has now been removed.
