Numbers for the week in class 025: there were 511 newly registered text marks; 252 previously registered text marks were cancelled; and 180 applications died before they made it to the finish line!

Note: The marks in part 1 are now fully registered and active! This list is compiled from the USPTO Trademark Search system. Some of these are legitimate brand names! I’ve included them on this list because those brand names are also words or phrases that may be used on the goods in question by crafters and makers.

PART 1-C: INTERESTING ILLUSTRATED MARK(S) OF THE WEEK

Today we’re going to talk about bad font use in stylized text marks.

First, we have MHUIRE, using a cursive font where the tracking has been widened enough to visibly disconnect the letters. I see SO MANY logos where this has happened.  For heaven’s sake, expand the text to outlines and adjust the tails so that the letters connect cleanly! This is just lazy design.

On the other side, we have HUAYO, which is using a long-time freeware font called Good Dog (sometimes styled as GoodDog). Freebies like this get a lot of use. Int his case, they’ve sized the lowercase letters down even smaller than normal, and thickened up the H, so that the line weight is visibly mismatched. Then they’ve crammed the “uay” together way too tight.

Two pieces of advice for designers from today’s examples: one, clean up your connections and spacing. Two, you can re-draw letters over the top of free fonts, so that they’re more unique and original for the brand, and so that the line weights are consistent!

PART 3: ABANDONED APPLICATIONS! 🎉

Here are the applications that were abandoned this week in class 025, with mark drawing code 4. The most likely cause was the applicant not submitting corrected, updated, or informative material by the USPTO’s deadline. Ding, dong, these witches are dead! 🪦

[sic] = A spelling, spacing, grammar, or punctuation error is part of the mark, not a typo from my butterfingers.
[removed from spreadsheet] = The cancelled item had been on my spreadsheet of marks, and has now been removed.
